What makes Home Performance with
ENERGY STAR different?

Rather than focusing on a single component such as single-paned windows, an old heating system, or leaky ductwork, Home Performance with ENERGY STAR offers a whole-house approach to energy inspection.  A Home Performance Assessment evaluates how all of your home's systems work together to determine the best recommendations to improve your comfort, protect your health and safety, and deliver energy efficiency and cost savings.

The Home Performance with ENERGY STAR Process

Step 1: The Home Performance Assessment

Home Performance with ENERGY STAR begins with a top-to-bottom visual and diagnostic home energy inspection by a specially-trained contractor using state-of-the-art equipment. Expect your contractor to inspect:

  • Typical big problem areas such as your attic or basement (insulation, air leakage)
  • Your home's heating, cooling, and water heating systems

The contractor will also perform a series of diagnostic tests, including:

  • Air infiltration testing (how much cold air leaks in from outside?)
  • Duct leakage testing (how much hot air gets lost between your furnace and the rooms where you want heat?)
  • Combustion safety testing (are your combustion appliances putting carbon monoxide into your house?)

Your house works as a system.

A contractor will also review and analyze at least twelve months of your home's utility bills. This provides an understanding of the seasonal trends and patterns of your home's energy consumption. (You will need to sign a simple consent form to let your utility companies know that it's okay to give the contractor information about your utility usage.)

Step 2: Improving Your Home's Energy Efficiency

After the home energy inspection, your contractor will assist you in selecting improvements that will be the best investments for your home and your family and can tell you how to take advantage of Federal tax credits for energy-efficient home improvements. Once you select the improvements that fit your needs and budget, your contractor will make the specified improvements to your home.
